bali: tegallalang

standing in the middle of the tegallalang rice terraces was unreal.

we stopped for lunch at a little cafe that i'll remember for making my "top ten worst bathrooms i've ever had to use" list.

but this was our lunch view...

we hired a little boy named dodi to be our guide, but first he chopped open a coconut for us.
 

 i think nate was the only taker on the coconut water

 

nate's shoe had an unfortunate encounter with the mud 

 

 the view after crossing the valley and beginning to hike over the hillside  

dodi showed us how he catches the tiny fish in the paddies

we met this woman along the trail and she motioned for us to try balancing her bucket on our heads too.
what was she carrying? oh, just a machete.

 

as we hiked further and further into the terraced paddies, it became just the four of us and dodi (and sage who slept through the whole shebang on nate's back). 

what a peaceful place...so quiet and just incredible as it was all built by hand.
