suhvaynuh.
a dreamy place with its wide streets framed by massive, arching oaks, historic buildings, trolleys, churches, and little parks tucked neatly between streets.
we'd planned to spend more time here, but with a nice windy forecast of 46 degrees, we did a day trip from hilton head instead.
we pulled up to mrs. wilkes' dining room on jones street just in time to wait in line for the lunch rush. thanks to rainy weather, it wasn't too crowded. we filled up our own family-style table, where tons of classic southern side dishes were scattered. the pièce de résistance was a plate of hot, fresh fried chicken piled high. i'm not even a fried chicken lover, but this stuff was gold. not too heavy, perfectly crispy. meanwhile, sage helped herself to scoops and scoops of baked beans.
we had to document the impressive (crazy) amounts of food, and that no one got left in the van.
more houses that stop me in my tracks and more twisty, mossy trees? yes. YES.
sanctuary!
actually, it was closed for worship. instead, we wandered through the savannah history museum. did you know the founder of girl scouts is a gentile savannah woman? truth.
in case you were wondering, mike the pool guy at the disney resort reported leopold's to be the second best ice cream in the united states of america. he didn't know what took first place, but swore this creamy goodness comes second.
sage asserts her independence by ripping her hair do out. she suddenly looks older here and i want to cry...because i'll miss two year-old sage and because sixteen year-old sage might make me want to rip my hair do out.
oh, and the ice cream was delicious.
we couldn't leave town without driving through this old, solemn cemetary. look at that eery moss.
and thus concludes part one of the great southern road trip.
charleston was my favorite place we visited, but that may have been influenced by the cold weather that seemed to follow us from south carolina to georgia.
we had to return for some basketball game between some rivals or something, but got back on the road after a little weekend hiatus.
