i had an epiphany over christmas break as i sat down to read a stack of real simple magazines I'd been saving for "when I have time". As I flipped through the January issue chalk full of butterflies and new year phrases like "let it go!", my lens suddenly zoomed in.
these ARE the days. these are the days i have the utmost privilege of staying at home to raise beautiful little souls. these are the days of messes and toddler feet running across the kitchen floor. these are the days of sometimes grasping for my sanity and simultaneously holding my girls close as much as they'll let me. these are the days of dishes and laundry and feeling overwhelmed, but also the days of choosing whatever we want to do each day and shaping, molding, teaching my girls. these are the days of their childhood. the magical, formative days that mean everything. these are the days to let go of time-consuming things that are good, but not best.
i'd really love to get to know a lot of people better, spend more time going to exercise classes, have all our photos organized and printed into books, actually make home videos with all those random clips stored on a smattering of devices, plan our life out a little more instead of flying by the seat of our pants, make all those recipes i've been meaning to try, be up on the news and what's going on in the education world and read much much more, and, and...this isn't the season for it all.
the human experience is so cyclical--the way we learn and re-learn, birth to death to life again. i am constantly, consistently learning and re-learning about what it means to be a mother. i know i'm only 3.6 years in, but this role feels so heavy and sacred to me. it's always on my mind. last year, i chose to zero in on moderation in all things, but this year? i need a little more focus. i need a little less clutter, both physically and mentally.
